Progress update: NaNo '11

National Novel Writing Month is reaching up, itching beyond our necks. We're not drowning in it, though, we're swimming in it, delighting in the cool brush of words against our skin, diving to the bottom, holding our breath as we look for buried treasures among the metaphors and similies that glisten in the refracted light.
Surprises in my novel so far:

• WELL. Didn't know you were going to be an apprentice mage, Gabe- or so very mean spirited. It'll come back to bite you, though.
• Oh look! A giant raptor!
• Hmm, so there's going to be dwarves in this story too?
• Forrest! I didn't think you had it in you. You were always such a nice goatherd. Then again, if you're going to be mind-controlled, it's not your fault.
• Handwriting is actually really fun, and a great way to fix "writer's block".
