I recently had a poll up on the sidebar about National Novel Writing Month, abbreviated NaNoWriMo. The only vote the poll has gotten so far is "what is NaNoWriMo"? So this post steps in to save the day.
National Novel Writing Month means writing one novel manuscript in the month of November. Said manuscript will be 50,000 words, whereupon contestant will have won. It is not a contest among writers, but for writers- you are competing only against your own limitations. Everyone who finishes is a winner, and is eligible for the prizes and goodies available.
I have completed the challenge twice, first in 2009, then in 2010. I am now preparing to again undertake the adventure. It is indeed an epic one, that is entirely rewarding and incredibly entertaining. It can at times be frustrating and difficult, but when you write your 49,999th and 50,000th words (THE END, of course:) at 11:30 on November 30th, there is no feeling quite like it.
And when you refine your manuscript and polish it (by this I mean beat it into submission) you will have a pretty little novel of your very own. Imagine putting your very own book upon your bookshelf, looking at its slender spine with your name slithering down.
So, if you're eager as well to take the plunge, to begin a journey unlike any other, here are some excellent resources for you:
The Official NaNoWriMo site is naturally the best resource. On its forums you will find wisdom and fellow writers, shared excitement and shared pain. My own profile is here, and I always welcome new writing buddies. (Note: the writing buddy feature isn't up yet, but it will be soon.)
This is a great post from the Sisters in Scribe blog, giving a set of basic instructions and helpful insight.
Another interesting page of tips is here from author Paul Carroll.
And from my own first NaNo experience, in 2009, my thoughts before and after.
Many more great tips can be found with a simple Google.
So are you going to come with me? We'll be in it together, and it'll be the best month so far.
See you in nanoland!
